GTA 6 gameplay: the quick answer
Rockstar has confirmed or directly described a wider set of GTA 6 systems than the launch material initially revealed. Current direct evidence covers flexible Jason-and-Lucia control, relationship activity, witness-based police reporting, layered vehicle theft and gym training. Developer interviews also describe progression-linked safehouses and map discovery, reactive NPC interactions, a Criminal Profile system, and food that can temporarily affect character gauges. This guide separates those statements from scenes shown only in official footage and from details Rockstar still has not explained.
This guide separates four evidence states: officially confirmed, shown in official material, editorial interpretation, and unknown or not confirmed. That distinction matters when answering searches such as “Is every building enterable?” or “Can every business be owned?” The accurate answer to both is currently: Rockstar has not confirmed that.

Gameplay Rockstar has explicitly described
Officially confirmed: Grand Theft Auto VI is presented as a single-player experience built around Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos. Rockstar says an easy score goes wrong, drawing them into a criminal conspiracy across Leonida and forcing them to rely on each other. The current release is set for 19 November 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S; a PC release has not been announced.
Rockstar describes its Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look presentation as footage captured entirely in-game on PlayStation 5. It is the most detailed official in-game presentation currently available, but it is still an edited presentation rather than a complete public demonstration of every system. Read GGWaypoint’s timestamped Extended Look analysis for presentation-specific evidence.
Jason and Lucia control and switching
Directly described in developer interviews: Jason and Lucia are the two playable protagonists. Rob Nelson told Famitsu that the unselected character can follow their own schedule, while switching may be free in some situations and restricted or forced by story and mission context in others. That is enough to confirm a flexible two-protagonist structure, but Rockstar has not published every switching restriction or a complete list of mission-specific rules.
Safehouses, chapters and map discovery
Directly described in a developer interview: in Famitsu’s interview, Nelson said the story progresses by chapter, Jason and Lucia move between safehouses as the story advances, and unexplored parts of the map remain hidden until the player visits them. This establishes progression-linked safehouses and area discovery. It does not confirm every property, unlock condition, interior or final map boundary.
Relationship and shared activity
Nelson told IGN that time spent together can develop Jason and Lucia’s relationship, with examples including pool, mini golf, kayaking and robberies. He also said players can engage with a romantic relationship or keep the pair as partners. The interviews do not publish affinity thresholds, romance penalties, permanent break points or ending outcomes.
NPC interaction and eavesdropping reactions
Directly described in a developer interview: Nelson told IGN that GTA 6 takes the interaction approach used in Red Dead Redemption 2 further. People can notice sustained eavesdropping or close following and may confront the player, leave or react aggressively. This confirms a more responsive interaction layer, but it does not establish every NPC behavior, dialogue rule or systemic consequence.
Witness-based wanted reporting
Directly described in developer interviews: a crime must be witnessed or trigger an alarm before it is reported. Nelson said police can know the pair and their vehicle, while separating, changing vehicles or changing appearance can help reduce recognition. Rockstar has not published every star-level trigger, response timer, search radius or final NPC behavior, so those details remain unknown.
For the full evidence trail—including Famitsu’s direct Rob Nelson interview, Rockstar’s official footage and the rules Rockstar still has not published—see the GTA 6 wanted-system guide.
Criminal Profile and world reactions
Directly described in developer interviews: Rockstar uses a Criminal Profile system to reflect how the player behaves and how the surrounding world responds. Nelson described it as supporting choices between escalating encounters and avoiding escalation where possible. The interviews do not publish a complete scoring model, thresholds, interface rules or every consequence.
Layered vehicle theft
Nelson also described a more layered vehicle-theft process. Certain parked cars can require story progress and specific tools, while an in-game phone scanner can show information such as locks, alarms, trackers and value. This confirms variation in access and information; it does not provide the complete vehicle economy, every acquisition route or final resale balance.
Fitness, food and character condition
Directly described in a developer interview: Famitsu’s interview describes player-controlled gym training and tracked health, cardio and fitness-related states. Nelson also said food can provide temporary gauge buffs, while training can raise base health and stamina. This confirms that exercise and consumption can affect character condition, but the interview does not publish a complete progression tree, every exercise, final stat ceilings or all body-change rules.
Stores, robberies and interiors
Directly described in a developer interview: players can eat at restaurants, visit stores and rob a convenience store either alone or with Lucia; a jewelry-store robbery was also used to demonstrate systems in the Extended Look. These examples establish specific interactive commercial spaces. They do not confirm that every building is enterable, every visible business can be robbed, or that properties can be bought and managed.
The official product material also confirms Standard and Ultimate editions. Named Ultimate Edition additions are threaded through Jason and Lucia’s story, while the separate support documentation identifies vehicles, weapons, clothing, shops and activity locations. Those names confirm that the content exists in the announced edition; they do not reveal every rule governing access, ownership, upgrades, prices or repeatability.
Gameplay shown in official media
Shown in official material: Rockstar’s trailers, screenshots and extended look depict on-foot scenes, road vehicles, motorcycles, boats, aircraft, firearms, robberies, chases and movement through urban, coastal, wetland and rural environments. They also show Jason and Lucia together and separately across story situations.
These are useful observations, but a visible action is not automatically a complete mechanic. A car appearing in a screenshot does not provide its official name or performance statistics. A storefront does not establish that players can enter, buy or manage it. A robbery scene does not provide a mission name, objective list, reward or place in the final chronology.

Characters and character interactions
Officially confirmed: Jason and Lucia are the central pair in Rockstar’s published story. Jason’s profile connects him to the Leonida Keys, local drug runners and Brian Heder; Lucia’s profile connects her to Leonida Penitentiary and a plan to change her circumstances. Rockstar also introduces Cal Hampton, Boobie Ike, Dre’Quan Priest, Real Dimez, Raul Bautista and Brian Heder by name.
Direct interviews now describe Jason and Lucia as the two playable protagonists. Rob Nelson told Famitsu that switching may be free, forced or restricted depending on story and mission context, and that the unselected character can follow their own schedule. Rockstar has not published a complete list of switching restrictions or every mission-specific rule. GGWaypoint’s GTA 6 characters guide keeps the confirmed roster separate from unidentified people visible in footage; the Jason and Lucia story explainer covers their relationship and story context.
Vehicles and movement
Officially named: Rockstar’s edition material identifies several vehicles, including the ’95 Grotti Cheetah, ’55 Vapid Stanier Sedan, ’67 Vapid Dominator Buggy, Shitzu Squalo and Ganado Retro Build. The official media library also shows many other cars, boats, motorcycles and aircraft.
Direct interviews also describe layered parked-car theft: some vehicles can require story progress and specific tools, while a phone scanner can show locks, alarms, trackers and value. This does not establish the complete vehicle economy, every acquisition route or final resale balance.
Unknown: Rockstar has not published a complete vehicle roster, final performance values, handling classes, storage rules or every acquisition method. Our GTA 6 vehicle guide explains the difference between an official name, a visual sighting and a tested statistic, while the vehicle database stores the named entries and their primary sources.
World and locations
Officially confirmed: GTA 6 is set across the fictional state of Leonida. Rockstar has introduced six named regional anchors: Vice City, Leonida Keys, Port Gellhorn, Mount Kalaga National Park, Grassrivers and Ambrosia.
Rockstar’s presentation establishes distinct urban, island, coastal, wetland, industrial and wilderness settings. It does not publish the final boundaries, exact scale, travel times or a complete road network. The GTA 6 map guide explains each named region, and the Interactive Location Explorer is a source-linked navigation aid rather than a claim about exact coordinates.

Activities, businesses and properties
Officially described or named: Rockstar’s regional material associates Mount Kalaga with hunting, fishing and off-road trails. Its Ultimate Edition information names modification shops, a salon, clothing and goods stores, a compound and a classic car collection. Character profiles also describe businesses connected to people such as Boobie Ike and Brian Heder.

Direct interviews confirm pool, mini golf, kayaking and gym training, and describe shared activities as one way Jason and Lucia can spend time together. The GTA 6 activities guide separates those statements from scenes that are merely shown. The Extended Look breakdown records where the relevant presentation scenes appear.
What that does not establish: These references do not confirm a universal business-ownership system, a management simulation, activity rewards, repeatability or that every named building is enterable in the base game. Edition content may have its own access conditions, and character-owned businesses should not be relabeled as player-owned property without an official source.
Combat, weapons and story-related evidence
Shown in official material: Firearms, armed confrontations and robbery situations appear in Rockstar’s footage and screenshots. Officially named: the Ultimate Edition list includes Hawk & Little Morgan Revolvers and Personalized Weapon Variants, while the Vintage Vice City Pack includes an exclusive weapon pattern.
Rockstar has not published the complete weapon roster, damage values, customization rules, aiming model or combat progression. Likewise, story footage does not provide a reliable mission order or complete objectives. Our GTA 6 missions guide records only the story and mission information that can be supported without inventing a walkthrough.
